FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Food Safety Inspection Reports Available OnlineSenate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-9) today reminded his constituents that they can now access food safety inspection results for most restaurants in the state online through the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's database. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture conducts annual inspections of all food establishments under its jurisdiction. The department then posts the results from its 2006 and 2007 food safety inspections in its online database. Previously the database only displayed whether the restaurant had passed inspection. Now, under the new database consumers are given a detailed description of why a restaurant did not pass. "Restaurant inspections are public records and consumers have a right to access this information," Pileggi said. "I encourage people to take advantage of this database." The new database can be accessed via the Department of Agriculture's website at http://www.agriculture.state.pa.us/pafoodsafety. Searches can be conducted using the facility name, county, or zip code. For questions and complaints regarding food safety and restaurant inspections, consumers can call toll-free, 1-866-366-3723. Six counties (Allegheny, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Erie and Montgomery), four cities (including Philadelphia), and 196 other municipalities handle their own licensing and inspections. Information on restaurants in these areas can be obtained by contacting that municipality. By the end of the year, the Department of Agriculture hopes to have these entities using a similar inspection system and sharing their reports with the state. |
